3 Badger Ride - Day 1

July 16, 2007 (59 miles, 2710 ft of climbing)
Madras-Culver-Smith Rock-Prineville

After camping in Cramalot Inn on the basketball court at Don and Marty Ratliff's home atop a hill overlooking Madras (thanks Don & Marty), we drove to Adele's place to start our bicycle ride. We started riding around 7:30 a.m. and a few minutes later, my cell phone rang. It was my cycling buddy Jack Scheffer from the cross country ride in 1998. He and his wife were hoping to plan a visit to Reedsport in late Aug. I have since contacted him and he is trying to arrange travel plans. We continued on to the Ratliff home which was on our route to have breakfast. The remainder of the day was hot - the thermometer on the odometer I have on the RANS recumbent a.k.a. BikeR read 94 degrees at one time. We had good tailwinds though and the riding wasn't too tough and tried to ride through every field or grass sprinkler we could find to keep cool. After passing a neat rock formation called Monkey Head, we arrived at our lunch stop at Smith Rock. Jim had our lunch snacks out and we enjoyed lying on the cool grass. Then we noticed a sprinkler watering the grass nearby we got thoroughly drenched . It felt great. On the way from Smith Rock, we visited a Rodriguez family friend's shop and chatted for a while and ate ice cream. We then proceeded to Prineville and checked out the local fair grounds facilities for a camping spot . It was too crowded to suit us so we decided to take Nadine Cobb's offer of camping in her backyard for the night. Jim cooked us a great meal and we all crashed for the evening. I slept in Cramalot Inn and everyone else slept under the stars. It didn't rain at all but there were a few dewey sleeping bags to pack up the next morning.
